Is Blog Success a Form of Paranormal Activity? How to Choose a WordPress Theme That Makes Money

Shoutout

This free report was requested by my good friend Natalie Chalmers. Thanks for the inspiration Natalie. You’re a great friend and always fun to talk to. Plus your advice isn’t half bad. Thanks for being you and inspiring me to write this today.

Here’s The Goods

There’s a lot of talk about how to get started online and what the best way to start a website is. Naturally you should get a free wordpress blog on your own domain from Free Blog Factory, but that’s just the beginning. If you’re like most people, you’re probably knock-kneed and perspiring over the idea of  actually succeeding online. Where do you start? Once you have your website, how do you make it sell? And you probably think you have to do everything perfect or the ghost of bad marketing will make you his play-thing, sending thousands of your peers to laugh at you and publicly humiliate you over your enormous blunders. If this blog post serves its purpose, by the end of it you will overcome your fears and learn how to choose a wordpress theme that makes you money.

1. Love Your Theme

There’s no way around it. The number one most important thing you can do is love your theme. If you love the way your blog looks, you’ll keep coming back to it. You’ll keep updating it, tweaking it, and OWNING it. You’ll make it yours, and you’ll happily share it with the world. You’ll constantly improve it and be happy in the process. This is part of being a blogger. You won’t get a blog that you fall in love with out of the box. It’s just a like a house: you have to decorate the walls and create an environment you really enjoy being in.

2. Keep It Simple

It seems incredible that the more bells and whistles you add to your blog, the worse it will perform, but when you think about it, it becomes apparent that a good blog theme is both simple and concise. Your readers are online, and they have a million options to choose from. They could be reading your blog one moment, and 5 seconds later their tweetdeck tells them to check out the latest viral video of a money juggling adorable puppies. You’ve got to make it easy for your readers to quickly find the information they’re looking for, and the way to do that is by trading bells and whistles for user experience. We as humans have a tendency to want it all, and we really may thing that our blog will be set apart from the others if we add the control-your-robot-butler toolbar to every page, but what you’re failing to think about is what your readers want. Your readers want good, valuable content and there’s no sacrifice for it. So start by adding good content, and once you’ve built an audience ask them what they think about the world domination widget.

3. Choose an SEO-Optimized Theme

This is where it can get tough. You may love the Pink Lillies theme by myspace user superhotdesigns12345, but resist the urge to use a theme that doesn’t come SEO-optimized from a top-notch, professional firm. You get what you pay for with your themes, and that’s why you’ll naturally get more success with an optimized theme like Thesis or Studiopress. Thankfully, Studiopress themes normally cost $50 or more but you’ll get one for free when you Get an SEO Optimized WordPress Theme for free From Free Blog Factory.

4. Do Stuff That Makes Money

Finally, here’s the kicker. If you want to make money with your blog, do stuff that actually makes money. This includes adding google adsense to your wordpress blog and learning how to write sales copy. But the most important thing is that you do the steps above. You can be a terrible writer  with no calls to actions and have customers beating on your door if you find a theme you love and show the world that you blog about your passion.

    Thanks Russell :-)

I wish there was a way to know upfront whether the pretty theme I’d chosen breaks every time I add the most basic useful plug in! Grrr!

I don’t want to control my robot butler, just have it aesthetically pleasing enough for me to meet #1 :-) and be able to add a few other functional bits and pieces. Oh well, trial and error!
